A PhD thesis on (health) data ownership: It can be stated that digital information is irremovable part of modern healthcare. The whole issue itself is actually bypassed by controlling patient information with different laws and regulations how patient information can be used and by whom. Nonetheless, the issue itself – who owns the patient information – is commonly missed or bypassed.

Personal Data Gentrification (Paper, 9p)

Individuals have undergone a process of Personal Data Gentrification, as data ownership has shifted from individuals to service providers and data consumers, as if the data is worth nothing to the individuals; these new owners then harness the data to obtain large profits. In this paper, we propose Personal Data Enfranchisement as a middle ground, empowering individuals to control the sharing of their personal information to shift the business flows of personal information. Based on these insights, we propose a model to gradually and incrementally make a shift from our current situation towards one of Personal Data Enfranchisement.

Theorising Personal Data Markets in the Age of Communicative Capitalism

In this article, we focus on the increasingly popular market-libertarian critique that proposes individual control, ownership, and ability to commodify one’s personal data as an answer to corporate data extraction, derivation and exploitation schemes. We critique the claims that personal data markets counterbalance corporate digital capitalism on two grounds. First, these markets do not work economically and therefore are unable to address the exploitative aspect of surveillance capitalism. Second, the notion of personal data markets functions ideologically because it reduces the critique of surveillance capitalism to the exploitation of consumers and conceals the real objective of data capitalists such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple to not (just) exploit audiences but to create worlds that create audiences.

Principles for Revenue Models of Data Stewardship

One of the biggest concerns, given data is an intangible and valuable asset, is how business models can be structured so that stewards remain incentivized to serve the interests of individuals and communities, and do not use the data for their own ends. Democratizing Our Data: A Manifesto

Public data are foundational to our democratic system. People need consistently high-quality information from trustworthy sources. In the new economy, wealth is generated by access to data; government's job is to democratize the data playing field. Yet data produced by the American government are getting worse and costing more.

Is selling personal data like smoking?

A great discussion triggered by this statement: Like smoking, selling personal data generated by one should be allowed if the individual so wants and it should be taxed to high heaven to discourage people from doing so.

MyData Wikipedia Page

There is no MyData entry on the English Wikipedia so far becahuse it’s been tricky to get past the [Notability requirement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability. Since MyData is now referenced in the EU Data Strategy this should be easier. Are there any wikipedia experts/enthusiasts around who’d like to look into this?

Open Invention Network

Viivi had an interesting chat with a person from the Open Invention Network who hopes that MyData Global would engage with them. They have a mechanism in place for becoming a “friend organisation”, which is an idea we’ve been kicking around at MyData Global as well. Question to open source folks here: what do you make of the initiative?

Should AGM coincide with the global conference in odd years?

In the future, would it make sense to organise the association’s autumn general meetings (AGM) to coincide with the global conference in odd years? As in, have the AGM as a part of the conference programme?

Test-driving a couple of ideas

What’s your first reaction to the twin claims that super-human, bias-free AI (let alone AGI) is not a) morally optimal nor b) possible? (The two claims are separate but linked. The issue at hand is whether we should try to get rid of bias and hence: a) is it morally imperative to get rid of bias and b) is it even possible to get rid of it.)
