MyData 2019 comms and marketing 101 for the community

Anna Ansku Tuomainen has created a folder (linked in the title) to support us in communicating MyData. The 101 doc is currently mostly about the conference but you are encouraged to creatively use the materials also for any comms needs you have. Also important is to remember to tag @mydataorg in your tweets and posts so those can be forwarded in the main channel.

1st Reading Club Took Place

This week the first reading club was held on Thursday and a number of interesting things were posted subsequently: @Fredrik Löfman posted an Economis article (Is Google an evil genius?) and an interesting article series on data-rights related issues. @Antti 'Jogi' Poikola proposed to read and discuss Laron Lanier, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now next.

Data Protection and Digital Agency for Refugees

For the millions of refugees fleeing conflict and persecution every year, access to information about their rights and control over their personal data are crucial for their ability to assess risk and navigate the asylum process. While asylum seekers are required to provide significant amounts of personal information on their journey to safety, they are rarely fully informed of their data rights by UN agencies or local border control and law enforcement staff tasked with obtaining and processing their personal information. Despite recent improvements in data protection mechanisms in the European Union, refugees’ informed consent for the collection and use of their personal data is rarely sought.

Tech companies organize two efforts to support personal data management

...and both are called Open GDPR. Though unrelated, the initiatives reflect some of the ways the ad and marketing industry is organizing itself around its personal data responsibilities.

Introducing Personal Data Exchanges & the Personal Data Economy

The next big technological shift is to a world where every individual can manage and (optionally) monetise their personal data. Companies like Facebook and Google already make billions because they know everything about us via our online habits. What if we could take a cut? What if we could own and sell our data directly?

The MyData Operator

This week was another planning call for the MyData operator workshop. The session description currently is: 'An outcome-orientated, multi-stakeholder workshop to better define the role of the Operator within the MyData ecosystem. The session will include perspectives from Japanese data banks, US fiduciaries, and global intermediaries with existing public and private-sector practitioners. The aim of the workshop will be to develop the direction and working party for a whitepaper to be published in 2019.'

Who joins Community Call about Japanese Information Banking?

Many of you've heard about the developments in Japan around Information Banking. We'll have the chance to hear more in depth presentations about it at MyData 2019 conference, while we wish to already share insights in the next community telco on July 19th.

Which personal data sources would be most useful to get easily portable?

Here's a try for quick crowdsourcing the above question. The aim is to crate a top-20 list.

Initiatives Posters

As discussed in the last monthly community telco, we suggest a way how all MyData initiatives could be represented at the MyData 2019 conference to promote themselves - developing a poster that shows the key elements of your hub / thematic group and a way to get engaged.

Are we open, transparent and participatory enough?

Teemu Ropponen wrote that he recently got some criticism from the membership about MyData Global not being transparent enough. Because transparency is one of the MyData key principles and many of the staff have some background in the open knowledge movement, this feedback stings and needs to be taken seriously. Read more about participation, planning, leading, and finance on Slack!

MyData Internals

If you have something to share with the MyData Community reach out to @Ansku Tuomainen so that she can put it into the monthly newsletter - the next one is going out on Wednesday, 24 July. And this week I started to also monitor the #mydata-volunteers channel: the website to register as a volunteer is https://mydata2019.org/volunteer/.

MyData's general manager @teemu.ropponen posted comprehensive information about the way MyData operates, how it is financed, and what the overall plans are - read more in the 'Questions Asked' section below. That sparked a discussion about the currently missing indigenous layer and if and how this can be rectified. And on a more technical side there is an ongoing effort in the Case Library to publish a first case and the process is described here.
